Rise and grind homies.
I woke up to the lovely sound of music at 6am playing throughout the albergue to wake everyone up at 6am.
This albergue reminded me of the bunk dorms I slept in during Beast Games. 50ish people in a room, all vibing together, and being woken up by mysterious music.
Once again, my bunkmate was snoring extremely loud last night.
Still no earplugs (don’t need em)
Because I sleep like a rock.
I got all my stuff packed up and hit the road at 7:12am. Today we are walking 13.36mi / 21.5km to Zubiri. It was misting outside just like yesterday with low visibility.
Today I chose to walk alone and it was extremely peaceful. I went at my own pace, stopped to enjoy some views, and took a great pee with an even greater view once the clouds started to lift.
While I was walking, I came across Spanish Civil Guards that were stopping Peregrinos to support us and let us know we are safe on their land. We all got pins and ribbons with their logo on it, which I attached both to my pack. It felt like some sort of publicity thing though. They recorded the whole interaction of them talking and attaching the pin to my pack. Super cool regardless. Building up my pack swag.
The walk from Roncesvalles to Zubiri was much easier and faster than yesterday’s. Views were great though since the sky cleared up and I was able to see the landscape.
I got into town at 12:30pm, a 5ish hour trek today. I found the local Albergue and ate more of my baguette, cheese, and ham for breakfast until the albergue opened at 1pm.
I took a shower, cleaned up, and went for a walk around the town. Not much here, a big school/sports complex and three restaurants/bars. The rest is housing.
I then ran into Julia and her friends from yesterday, she had just arrived into town because she was having stabbing pain in her knee during today’s trek.
I pointed her to the Albergue and then went to the river to cool my feet and found a dog that is a clone of my sister’s dog Jackie. He was dropping the stick infront of me and barking at me to throw it. When I would reach for it, he would grab it before I could. And he would drop the stick up river and it would float to me. I don’t know who owns this dog, but I saw it walking around town the whole day so he must be communal.
I then went to a cafe, and got two slices of tortilla de patata, one regular and the other with ham on top. And two croquettas. With Julia. And Alfonso also joined and we got beers. Food was delicious. Beer as well.
Then Julia left and Alfonso and I met some new homies. Max from Australia, Ludwig from France, Ivan from Croatia, and Jessica from Santiago de Compostela! We talked with them until 8:30pm and then we went back to the Albergue. I took another walk around town to write today’s journal, when I found this cool bmx track behind the sports complex.
Today was very chill, almost too chill. I did not expect today’s walk to be easy. Still no blisters. Hips are a bit sore from the pack, knee hurts a bit but I’ve been stretching and ripping my moonwalks. Still vibes.
Tomorrow we walk into Pamplona. Super stoked for that, and excited to get a proper dinner at a normal restaurant. Hopefully find some good fruits and veggies too. Because my diet has mostly consisted of bread, cheese, and ham.
See y’all then,
David
